PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENT - FRAMING THE HIP ROOF
Cut the 2 x 6 ridge to the correct length (L - W + 1½") or 4' 1½". Fasten a common rafter on each end of the ridge and then install the unit onto the base. Place the remaining common rafters at 16" on centre.
Follow the diagram with the framing square set at 9 & 17 and scribe lines on either side of the 2 hip rafters that have not been dropped, Using the hand plane, bevel from the scribed lines over to the top centre of the hip rafter.
Using the instructions in the text and on the PowerPoint, layout and cut 8 hip jack rafters for the model roof. Remember that 4 are bevelled to the right and 4 are bevelled to the left.
Position the 4 hip rafters exactly on the corners of the base. Remember to reduce the tails to suit the common rafter tails. Locate the hip jack rafters and then the fascia boards.
Cut a 2 x 4 to fit exactly under the ridge board. Measure the length of this vertical prop and send in your measurement along with a photo of the completed roof.

Pre-arrange a time (by email) with your group members (I would suggest around 7pm, after supper):
- Meet and discuss how the construction of the model roof is going
- describe any difficulties that you are having
- send photos of your project-to-date to each other
- try to solve any problems as a group
- compare the lengths of the vertical props
