Now that we have mastered the calculation and cutting of the common rafter, we move on to constructing the Gable Roof, We will determine at what height to set the ridge board, where to place the collar ties, how to secure the ceiling joists, and how to determine the common difference and to cut the gable studs.
This PowerPoint will show the steps required to calculate and cut the common rafters and the gable studs.
The gable roof from mnauth
Given the exterior dimensions of a building and the slope of the gable roof, determine the total rise, the line length of the common rafter, the area of the roof surface, and the number of 4' x 8' panels required to deck the roof along with the required bundles of shingles.
PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENT
For our model roof we will choose a building footprint of 4' x 8' and a roof slope of 9 in 12. The common and hip jack rafters will be cut out of 2 x 4 stock and the hip rafters will be 2 x 6's.
Construct a base with 2 x 4's on edge, cross pieces at 16" on centre and a ½"plywood cover.
Layout and cut 2 common rafters to suit the 4' x 8' base. Use a 2 x 6 x 5' for the ridge board and an eave projection of 4" with 1 x 4 fascia board. For the birdsmouth use a 'stand or 'HAP' of 2½". Check that the two rafters are cut correctly and then cut 8 more.
